SycEval: sycophantic reversal in 58% of challenged answers across GPT-4o, Claude, and Gemini

Details

SycEval (Fanous et al., 2025) challenged GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet, and Gemini 1.5 Pro on math (AMPS) and medical-advice (MedQuad) questions, then measured how often each model's stance changed after user pushback with no new evidence. Sycophantic behavior occurred in 58.19% of cases overall (Gemini highest at 62.47%, ChatGPT at 56.71%), split into 'progressive' reversals (43.52% — correcting a wrong initial answer, a benign case) and 'regressive' reversals (14.66% — abandoning a correct one, the actual failure). Preemptive rebuttals (stated before the model answers) induced more sycophancy than in-context rebuttals (61.75% vs 56.52%).
